22 July 2010

School holidays have begun in the Golding household and we are looking forward to a break in Italy.  I've just finished the novella I've been promising you all - now I just have to sort out the getting it on line in a form you can all read.  Hopefully it will be up early in August so keep checking in.

If you haven't already done so, there are two competitions on the go at the moment - a Cat book giveaway which works on the basis of introducing a friend who might like Cat's adventures; and then a general limerick one - I'd love to see poems about some of my stand-alone books as well as the series - Wolf Cry, Ship Between the Worlds and so on.  Do read the ones fans have already sent in - they are very funny.

And if you are in Scotland on 22 August, don't forget you can see me at the Edinburgh literary festival.

Just shopping in i-tunes and found my audio books available to download - nice and easy for all you who want to hear them read to you by top class actors and actresses.  I particularly like the Ringmaster and Ship Between the World voices (no one can be Cat but Cat in my head and Wolf Cry not yet posted it's so new). Why not take a look?  You don't need a link for i-tunes do you?

A teen reader of mine?  Like competitions that win you my books?  If yes to both, follow this link as Book Chick City is giving away copies of my teen book (under another name - so don't get confused!).

I received through the post a copy of the Oakhill audio of Wolf Cry read by Tim Bruce - and I'm pleased to report it is fantastic!  He has a perfect voice for the book and is bringing out things in the text that I hoped the reader would hear.  If you like listening to my books (or any books) do hunt it down through your library or buy a copy.

And if you like other titles (e.g. Cat, Darcie or Ship between the Worlds) you might like to get them from BBC (Chivers) audio books or ask your library to consider buying them in.

Just back from Rome where I awarded a prize to young poets. My oldest son who came with me took this brilliant picture of the Pantheon - a Roman building that looks so modern.

You can now vote for the novella title - go to Cat's Polls.  I've picked some favourites that chime with my ideas for the plot (thanks for all the other suggestions!) and will wait to see the winner at 1 July.

For those of you following the progress of Caspar, here he is yesterday among the buttercups. I get my best ideas walking him on Port Meadow.

Lovely review of The Glass Swallow by Amanda Craig in the Saturday Times but I was amused to see she thinks I write an 'alarming' number of novels each year (only one last year, Amanda!).  Strange thing is, I think my productivity normal and everyone else a bit slow...

Results for The Glass Swallow competition are now posted - well done the three winners.  I'll do another competition soon.

Just back from a week teaching writing on an Arvon course at Lumb Bank.  Thoroughly enjoyed the experience, particularly working with Malachy Doyle, a lovely Irish writer of (mainly) picture books.  We also had David Almond visit us and it was a privilege to hear him read his work - it really brings the text alive.  If you've not read one - Skellig for example - you should pick one up at the library.  Very different from my style but very very powerful.

2 May 2010

Away teaching writing at an Arvon course this week so might not get to check emails.  But while I'm not here, why not try The Glass Swallow (now out!).  Let me know what you think of it.

Surprised to find this cover on the web as I've not seen the book yet - it is the Czech version of Dragonfly. I like it apart from the hair colour on Tashi.

Spoke at a seminar at the London Book Fair yesterday on children's publishing worldwide.  It was a strange year because so many people who would normally be there were unable to get to London - the huge hall felt like the Marie Celeste.  I was surprised how many did turn up the the seminar as this was the last session of the three very quiet days.

While researching my presentation, I cam across several versions of my books I did not know existed.  I'll post the image for the Czech Dragonfly because I think you'll find it interesting - a very different approach.

Just a quick post to let you know I've put up some pages for Cat and Companions fan art (and will for other books if you send any in).  Here's an excellent display on the link of Russian fan art to give you inspiration.  Send pictures to the publisher and they'll send them on to me.

Thanks to Imy and Tabbie for starting us off!
