CAT'S Q&A

Do you have questions that you would love to ask Cat Royal? Allow Cat to put her 18th Century perspectives on your modern dilemmas.

My dear friends,

Good news - the Duchess of Avon has now answered your questions.  Her replies are now posted.

Dr Golding has told me that some of my messages to her which she used to record my sea-going adventures are now available on something called Twitter.  You have to look for Catherine Royal but then can follow my story there.  It gives a behind-the-scenes look at what went on - not everything made it in to my memoirs.

I have also just received this shocking news from Mr Egmont, my bookseller:

Dear loyal readers,

We had hoped to publish Cat Royal’s latest adventure in August of this year, but instead we have had to delay publication after a terrible occurrence.

The precious manuscript was snatched from our offices late one evening, possibly by that unscrupulous publisher, Mr Tweadle, or one of Billy Shepherd’s henchmen, we do not know. Happily one of our editors was working late and spotted the thief .... Pursuing the villain, he saw him cast the script into the Thames, and with the help of a local fisherman was able to rescue it in time to save it ....

But sadly for all Cat’s readers, much of her tale had to be retyped through water damage and we will not be able to have it ready for publication for this August. We hope to have it ready for the press ten months later than expected.

Yours regretfully, Mr Egmont

I am very frustrated by the delay, which once again is out of my hands.  I have decided instead to release on these pages a small adventure - a novella in fact - for my faithful readers to read for free.  I will start the installments in August to reward you for your patience.  It will start at the point I left you in the Caribbean.

Meanwhile, please do carry on asking for my advice.

Cat Royal

Cat I LOVE your books, read all five in a week. i jus wanted to ask how many books are you going to write because i just cant get enough! Hannah xxx P.S roughly how old were you in your first book, the Diamond of Drury Lane?
Dear Hannah, I'm not sure - Dr Golding is talking about 9 parts but we will see where my adventures take me. I was around 12 or 13 during the events of Diamond. Cat

Dear Cat, I was wondering about your trip to the Indians, How did you communicate and did they treat you like with? did you like that?I am going to meet you best friend Julia Golding in about a week or so ! am so excited!
Dear Gabrielle The Indians were very hospitable - much nicer than many Europeans I know. The only difficulty was leaving... Cat

Dear Kati Because I am a girl - how silly can you get! Cat

My English teacher is quite odd. Really. She feels rather strongly about the American Revolution. If there is something that someone says to remind her of a particular event, she rants and raves etc. She told us a very perculiar story of how to remember her name. I love English, but the teacher this year is a bit off-putting. Maths is tedious! I would prefer sewing. About the message before, I am learning Latin! And more French. .;pl,lokijnuytrewq. Whoops! My cat Venezia just ran over the keyboard! I think that the sea is capital! I suppose sometimes it is a bit wild, but the un-predictable-ness is so amazing. I have been looking more into the political side of the French Revolution, and boy is it complicated! How does one keep up! What have you done about Mr. Tweadle???? I havent heard anything. You should go to wherever that bug is living now and give him what for, perhaps employ a mastermind to give you some satisfaction. I want to be a lawyer when I am older and nothing will stand in my way. I want to bring justice to victims and send the vile criminals to rot in jail. It's a leap year this year (infact I write this on a day that only occurs every four years!) But what is the point of an extra day? Cant they make it there all the time or not there at all? Until you reply, Milli xox (and no, swapping insults would not fit your agony aunt role, and it would not be good for me as it would put my chances of becoming choir leader in jepordy. I dont want to be a spoil-sport but I love my singing.)
Dear Milli Leap year - I can enlighten you. The Earth takes 365 days and a quarter to go round the sun so every four years they catch up on one day by having an extra one. Mr Tweadle - last seen in rags after his bookshop mysteriously burnt down... Cat

hello i am writing a detective story set in Paris during the revolution where a female detective from London is solving a murder in a girls school and i was wondering what was the most amazing thing you saw there and what was it like going from London to Paris for the first time??? i am absoutely useless at sewing and i am having a test in it... arhhhh Do you have any tips on how to escape too much trouble? love from Emilie xxx
Chere Emilie, I think that the most amazing thing I saw was the invasion of the Tuilleries Palace by us commoners (though I was less keen on what happened next). My first voyage to France was a horrid experience - the Channel is foul for poor sailors. How to keep out of trouble - don't be called Cat Royal. Cat P.S. I send my commiserations for the sewing test.

Dear Cat, I think the books are fantastic! I can't wait for the next one. Emilie P.S. Please keep writing!

hello! i have read your books so much i feel as if i know you and we are great friends. after forcing all my friends (at sword point) to read your books, i was delighted with them telling me that i am almost exactly like cat royal. apparently i am practically your personality twin! i love writing loads and loads! i am writing two books- one with my friend and another on my own. Both the main characters are based on me- not scared of being "unladylike" and with a dreadful temper! i protest! last monday you came to my school (st peters cath comp, guildford) but only spoke to year7's. (seething). i really wanted to meet you but i was in lessons and could not get out in time. by the time i got to the lrc, you were gone!!! at the moment i am listening to sundays go4it! anna xox
My dear Anna I think it was my friend, Julia, who was at your school and she says she was sorry to miss you. I think we would get on like a house on fire if we met. Cat

Katie wrote on 27 February 2008:

Hello Cat. Tell me, what is it like to live in a theatre? It must be really exciting! I'd love to live in one! Or would you rather live somewhere else, and if yes, where would it be?
Dear Katie It is very exciting and I certainly miss it. Somewhere else? Possibly a small house with a bit of garden, filled with books. Cat

Isabel wrote on 27 February 2008:

Dear Cat, Doyou ever see yourself writing something that isn't from life experience? I'd like to be able to write from experience but my life isn't as action packed as yours. I have whole notebooks of storie ideas but finding the time to wrte them is my problem.
Dear Isabel I always rather fancied writing a gothic horror story. Do you think I'd be any good at it? Cat

Katie wrote on 27 February 2008:

Hello Cat! In my school there is a rumour going round that you fancy Syd. Is this true? You can trust me: I am your number 1 fan!
Dear Katie, I would never put much trust in gossip. Cat

Katie wrote on 27 February 2008:

I have a friend who is a big fan of you- just like me! Who is your best friend?
Dear Katie I am blessed with many good friends. Possibly Pedro - but Syd, Frank and Lizzie are all up there on my list. Cat

Milli wrote on 26 February 2008:

Oh, really! You wouldn't want to hear me at my full-yelling-capacity!!!!!! Oh, no. Just ask my dad. I suppose you could liken such matches to you and Billy on a less than polite day. I do have some good insults, but I fear they are too *clears throat* rough, to say the least, for people (of the same station as Lizzie and slightly below) above me reading this page. :-). I do however, delight in saying, GO GIRL!!!!!! As I have almost finished Cat O Nine Tails. Haha!! Nice first try with the boxing, Cat, you could take it up professionally and show the Camden Crusher exactly what it is like to be beaten by a girl!!!!!!!!! And how you got Syd to punch you!!!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!! I was rolling on the floor. (Not that it was funny to you or him, but never mind!) I would have been quite becoming to have the name of a flower on your shoulder! HAHAHAHA!!!!!! Sorry, I do get carried away sometimes. I KNOW WHO CATHERINE IS!!!!!!!!! YAY! (Yes, yes, I know reading ahead is bad, but I simply had to know!) Somethings are essential. Do you have a middle name? Mine is Erin, after my mother. I was going to be called Amelia-Erin as my first name, but mum decided against it. Anyway, thank-you for now making me wary of potted palms and alcoves, especially when the latter is behind the potted palm. Sorry for all the exclamation marks and laughing. Whould, by any chance, being practically a cat, have anything to do with you not liking water/the sea? Best go now, school is starting, time to face my English teacher who would not be out of place in Bedlam. Milli xox
Dear Milli Fancy a round of fisticuffs sometime? You sound like a most amusing opponent. Or perhaps we could challenge your English teacher to take on the Crusher... How do you say it in your cant - Go girl! Cat

Isabel wrote on 26 February 2008:

Dear Cat, Have you ever writen anything else besides your adventures or do you think you're ever going to? I filled almost a whole notebook with ideas for stories! But finding the time seems to be my problem. When you were at Westminster School, what ws your favorite subject? Latin has always sounded like a beautiful language to me but it's not as commonly taught anymore. what a shame.
Dear Isabel These are the only products of my pen to date. I liked Latin the most too. I wish I'd had more time to make a start on Greek. Cat

Isabel wrote on 25 February 2008:

Dear Cat, We have this thing at shcool called independent study, where we get to do a reserch report on anything we want. But instead of doing a reserch report I'm going to do a diary of a miad to a rich family who has to take care of three childeren, and has to earn respect among them, But I'll make it exciting. And because it's shcool I suppose I'll have to tie down some facts too. What do you think! I have not yet read Black Heart of Jamacia but I hear that you had to leave Pedro. How awful!!!!!!! How do you find the time to do your writing? I love writing, but can never find enough time to really get into it. P.S. If you had a choice from having all your wonderful adventures or living a quiet peaceful life what would you choose(althought i guess if you had no adventures you'd have less to write about, I may be wrong) Isabel
Dear Isabel I always think that a healthy dose of fact helps make a better story - after all I base all my own tales on the truth. Your story about the maid sounds wonderful - many of my friends who are in service have horrid charges to look after. The horrid little tykes put toads in their beds and spiders in their tea cups - quite, quite foul. if I was a nursery maid I'd do the same back - with knobs on. Yours sincerely Cat P.S. I can't imagine me living a quiet life, can you?

Milli wrote on 24 February 2008:

I'll have you know that I am as common as you!!! Anyway, quarreling is so annoying. I'm just saying that people never tell you exactally what you want to know. Ah, well, I'm getting Cat O NIne Tails out of the library today. As Common as You,' Milli xox
Oh drat, I was looking forward to a good argument - the chance to fling a couple of choice insults! But I suppose that wouldn't fit with my agony aunt role, would it? Cat

harshana wrote on 24 February 2008:

what was your favourite bit when you were on board the Courageous??????? And did you like acting with mrs peabody in kingston??? i like acting and i do some drama and have acted in loads of plays. it great being in staage isnt it???? you have lived in the most extraondinary times, Cat! did u feel as sad as i did when you leave Pedro??? plz reply
Dear Harshana I did not enjoy life on board the Courageous very much - I do not advise seafaring as a career choice for any of my young readers (they'll take you when you're about 12 if you are a boy). Mrs Peabody was tough but I admired her pluck. I definitely enjoyed acting as long as I was not the target of rotten eggs - then it lost its appeal. And yes, it was very sad to leave Pedro, but who is to say I will not see him again? Cat

Milli wrote on 24 February 2008:

NOT YOU TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GRRRRRRR!! Why will no one in this world take pity on me and why is everyone in this world a tyrant (:-)?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pink is alright, I like green and blue. I have to co for a bike ride now!!! :-) Milli xox
Madam, I take exception to being called a tyrant! Tyrants live in palaces and order the population to eat cake when they are starving. Yours in high dudgeon Cat Royal, One of the Common People
