CAT'S Q&A

Do you have questions that you would love to ask Cat Royal? Allow Cat to put her 18th Century perspectives on your modern dilemmas.

My dear friends,

Good news - the Duchess of Avon has now answered your questions.  Her replies are now posted.

Dr Golding has told me that some of my messages to her which she used to record my sea-going adventures are now available on something called Twitter.  You have to look for Catherine Royal but then can follow my story there.  It gives a behind-the-scenes look at what went on - not everything made it in to my memoirs.

I have also just received this shocking news from Mr Egmont, my bookseller:

Dear loyal readers,

We had hoped to publish Cat Royal’s latest adventure in August of this year, but instead we have had to delay publication after a terrible occurrence.

The precious manuscript was snatched from our offices late one evening, possibly by that unscrupulous publisher, Mr Tweadle, or one of Billy Shepherd’s henchmen, we do not know. Happily one of our editors was working late and spotted the thief .... Pursuing the villain, he saw him cast the script into the Thames, and with the help of a local fisherman was able to rescue it in time to save it ....

But sadly for all Cat’s readers, much of her tale had to be retyped through water damage and we will not be able to have it ready for publication for this August. We hope to have it ready for the press ten months later than expected.

Yours regretfully, Mr Egmont

I am very frustrated by the delay, which once again is out of my hands.  I have decided instead to release on these pages a small adventure - a novella in fact - for my faithful readers to read for free.  I will start the installments in August to reward you for your patience.  It will start at the point I left you in the Caribbean.

Meanwhile, please do carry on asking for my advice.

Cat Royal

Dear Cat, Have you seen Meatpie and ferret features latley? have they changed? Are they much more maturer than last time you met them?(stupid question but just look at billy boil!) Waiting eagerly for your answer, Yours truly, Maariyah. P.S: How's baby Catherine getting along?
Dear Maariyah, I have been away from London for so long that fortunately I have not seen them. I imagine they are still with Billy's gang as they would not have the imagination to strike out on their own. Cat

I'm back!!!!!!! Turns out the groups that the teacher put my friends in without me were for 1 activity. Sorry Mrs. M-B!!!!! And more thanks are due to Madee (for telling me the above) and Cat for making me take a deep breath and bringing me on to thinking that it might be a good idea to ask someone who actually listens in class (Madee) Bad news with the good. :-( Madee, Izzy, Olivia and I didnt win LitQuiz. Which means we are not going to Oxford (again for me! :-)!!) to attend the world finals. This was our last year so we are all exxxxxxxxtemely sad. *sniff* We all need anti-depression pills or we might commit suicide. Jokes! I have just written my first book in another language! Actually, it's a collection fo (very) short stories in one big-ish book. It's in French. Speaking of languages, I have to write a minute long speech in Latin. I can see why you like it, Cat. Most interesting. Especially since it is the language/culture (which we call Classical Studies). And moooooooore exciting news. My Social Studies teacher has revealed to us that some time this year we will be studying...wait for it...The Ablution (I'm sure I have spelt that wrong...) of the Slave Trade!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!! Poppy, Sam, Madee, Olivia, Dahne and Harry will all be EXPERTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Besides reading your book we like other historical fiction books set around your time). Madde also thanks you for your "d" words. Must go-cooking!!!!!! Mmmmmmmmmmmm-Condensed Milk... Milli xox
Dear Milli I think you mean abolition... Cat

Maariyah wrote on 07 June 2008:

Dear Cat, i am amazed at the amount of times in your life when you take risks, and put your neck on the line for others in need.why do you do this don't you think someone else will se sense and help you or is there another reason? Please answer soon as i am dying to find out the answer, and one thing when is cat cradle coming!?? All the other books are rubbish, so please for me write quicker! Your truly, Maariyah P.S: Do you have a sun tan when you came back from jamaica????
Dear Maariyah, I can't help taking risks: if I see something that needs doing, I just jump straight in. You could call me reckless - I definitely have a temper. And yes, I did have a suntan, I'm afraid to admit. Not very fashionable when ladies are supposed to be as white as milk... Cat

El wrote on 07 June 2008:

Dear Cat (or whoever answers this question!) I don't quite yet understand the relationships between Cat, Syd, Pedro, Frank and Jenny. Who exactly likes who or loves someone? I know you might findthis question stupid but i have to admit......i'm a bit......or VERY slow at times! So sorry! Also ive just finished Black heart of Jamaica and wanted to know what happens to Cat and Billy on the boat, or Syds reaction when Cat turns up with Billy!!!! Or is that in Cats cradle?????? I'll wait.....if i can understand that much!!! from el. p.s- i love the books but im not THAT slow. So dont comment!!!
My dear El, You can love more than one person. To my knowledge I am not romantically involved with any of those you mention but I can still love them as friends. Cat

Natasha and Grace wrote on 07 June 2008:

Dear Cat/ Frank, We really love your adventures. They are the greatest books alive. Grace and I are your biggest fans. One question: Grace wants to know whether cat loves Syd or not, and she tells me to ask if Frank has any other titles. Lots of love, Natasha and Grace
I do love Syd of course - he's my oldest friend. Cat

Catrina wrote on 05 June 2008:

Dear Cat: i dont know why i love your books so much maybe because my similarity to you: I have no parents(an orphan) I have a very kind person taking caring of me (like Mr S.) I have an arch enemy who recently made truce with(like billy ) I have a friend who looks out for me in trouble(like syd) I have a friend who get to my nerves sometimes(like pedro) I have a two friends(twins) who are richer than me and the boy is always cheeky(like lizzie and frank) but there is one problem no adventures...i only want an adventure to remember but nothing happens nothings pops up like it happens to you how does it happen to you? Love Catrina
Dear Catrina I think I must be a magnet for trouble - that can be the only explanation. Cat

Sophie wrote on 05 June 2008:

Hiya I just finished Black Heart of Jamaica and I'm just wondering if Jenny and Pedro have fallen in love? Or do I have to wait for Cat's Cradle? I don't think I can wait that long! Thanks in advance Soph XXX
Dear Sophie, I'm afraid I've not heard from Pedro but I'm pleased he's with a friend even if they don't fall for each other in that way. Cat

Danielle wrote on 02 June 2008:

Hi Cat! I have always admired you, and your books are captivating. The way you always keep trying, is so great, and you always think of others before yourself. But I have to ask, what exactly are you afraid of? You've always been brave to me. And how is Frank, and Lizzie, and Johnny and Pedro? Has Frank gotten over what that wretched Dixon did him? Oh I hope so. Its terrible what that man did.Putting you through all that. Anyway, hows baby Catherine, is she okay? You know being pirate sounds very exciting. I havent read very far yet, but I'll soon be really stuck in. Please anwer my questions, though theres a lot Your admirer Danielle. PS: your amazing
Dear Danielle, I think most of the answers to your questions are found in my books but I can answer one: what am I afraid of? Losing all my friends. Oh and sewing. Cat

Lola wrote on 01 June 2008:

Dear Cat, First of all thank u for helping me ... Second i have another question for you. I have these 2 friends both of whom i havent known for that long. One fo them said that the other spead about a really mean rumour about her mum in her primary school. But my new friend says this isnt true. I like my new friend she is nice to me. But because i get the bus home and a girl who gets on my bus nows my friend(they are at the same school) Im worried that if i invite my friend over to my house and she would have to get the bus with me then my other friend would know and totally hate me. I am not particularly good friends with the girl who might hate me but i want to stay on good terms with her....... Please help and THANK YOU SO MUCH in advance
Dear Lola, You can only judge people on what you know about them as a fact - not a rumour. In your shoes, I would stand firm and explain to your acquaintance, if she raises it with you, that the new friend has always been pleasant to you and you wish to give your friendship a chance. Thank her for worrying about your welfare, but suggest that you have to make your own judgments about people. Cat

Ellie wrote on 01 June 2008:

Hiya Cat I wrote before but i didn't really ask you any questions! Please answer my last one as best you can and this one will have questions. Pedro and you see like great friends. I know you've had severl fights but do you argue alot? I don't really like it at school because people aren't that nice. Then I have loads of great friends outside of school so thats alright but school is really killing me I'd do anything to swap lifes with you what should I do? Your friend Elle (short for ellie and elena)
Dear Elle, Um, I'm ashamed to admit it but I do argue rather a lot with people. Pedro knows how to avoid my temper but you should see Syd and I sometimes! I have become very familiar with the word 'sorry'. Cat

Ellie wrote on 01 June 2008:

Dear Cat I love your books and would love to write like you someday. I think it would be so much fun to meet most of the people you meet and I think Frank sounds rather dashing! I was so pleased at the end of the last book and really happy for lizzie. I am dieing to know what happens next and am scouring the book shops already in the false hope I might find something. If i had to fall in love with someone in the book it would be Frank because he has a bit of a cheeky adventurous side but maybe he'd be a bit safe for you. I think I love the books because I'd like to be a bit more like you and a bit less like me. I love writing and have about a million stories I've written that I daren't show to anyone. When I read your books I want to tell everyone what's happening because it's so exhilarating and I want to write and show people and I really feel like I am there on the pirate ship,in france somewhere exiting. I feel I am part of the escape and the chase and I love that! Keep writing Cat Royal and I'll keep reading. Your friend, Ellie
Dear Ellie You sound like a girl after my own heart! I had lots of stories I had scribbled in secret before Dr Golding took me under her wing. Practice is the secret of being a good writer so keep on with them! Cat

Amy wrote on 31 May 2008:

dear Cat, i have been going through a hard time at the moment and i must say that i wish i had your spirit and determination. You have been through alot more than me and you wont let things get you down, do you have any tips on how to just carry on? It would be most appreciated, Thank-you Amy P.S. do you think you will be travelling again? I love to read about all the places you have been xx
Dear Amy I am sorry to hear that you are having a difficult time. I think what keeps me going are my friends, though I admit that they can also be the source of the worry too. It is important to remember to value yourself - in a good way, I mean: none of us like a conceited oaf or a popinjay. And if you have someone to hug - a mum or dad or a friend - that's a good way of reminding yourself that it's not all bad even when things seem really bleak. Cat

Caty wrote on 31 May 2008:

hello cat i have a problem i had a friend who i stuck with when she had a fight with her best friend but then her best friend came and apoligezed to me for igonoring me and we became friends again but then my other friend who had the fight ignored because i kind of got carried away by staying with the girl she had a fight with and ignoring her for the whole day i always say im going to say sorry but i dont have as much courage as you have cat oh and something else did you really get a tattoo and did syd or billy find out?
Dear Caty, I suggest you don't make too much of this - have some dignity. If you apologize that should be it - end of story. Your friend (if she is a true friend) will get past it. Yes, I really have a tattoo. Cat
