CAT'S Q&A

Do you have questions that you would love to ask Cat Royal? Allow Cat to put her 18th Century perspectives on your modern dilemmas.

My dear friends,

Good news - the Duchess of Avon has agreed to answer your questions so start sending them to me now.  Her replies will be posted at the end of March - prepare for her to be outrageous.

Dr Golding has told me that some of my messages to her which she used to record my sea-going adventures are now available on something called Twitter.  You have to look for Catherine Royal but then can follow my story there.  It gives a behind-the-scenes look at what went on - not everything made it in to my memoirs.

I have also just received this shocking news from Mr Egmont, my bookseller:

Dear loyal readers,

We had hoped to publish Cat Royal’s latest adventure in August of this year, but instead we have had to delay publication after a terrible occurrence.

The precious manuscript was snatched from our offices late one evening, possibly by that unscrupulous publisher, Mr Tweadle, or one of Billy Shepherd’s henchmen, we do not know. Happily one of our editors was working late and spotted the thief .... Pursuing the villain, he saw him cast the script into the Thames, and with the help of a local fisherman was able to rescue it in time to save it ....

But sadly for all Cat’s readers, much of her tale had to be retyped through water damage and we will not be able to have it ready for publication for this August. We hope to have it ready for the press ten months later than expected.

Yours regretfully, Mr Egmont

I am very frustrated by the delay, which once again is out of my hands.  I have decided instead to release on these pages a small adventure - a novella in fact - for my faithful readers to read for free.  I will start the installments in August to reward you for your patience.  It will start at the point I left you in the Caribbean.

Meanwhile, please do carry on asking for my advice.

Mademoiselle Royal, If you could meet any single person in the world, who would it be?

I would love to meet Fanny Burney, one of my favourite authors. Cat

Horrid and disorientating. They sympathized (Billy found it rather funny of course). Cat

Twiddle! Tweadle. He was not impressed by him and if he had caught him would have made sure he made an impression of his own, if you understand me. cat

Dear Cat, I shall be visiting London this spring with my friends and I was wondering if you could recomend any places worth visiting. I must warn you that my parents are rather protective of me so these places must be in a decent area and far, far, FAR away from any locations frequented by anyone like your dear friend Billy Sheperd. They would prefer it if I came back in one piece... Sincerely, Katherine

Dear Katherine, I would highly recommend the pleasure gardens at Vauxhall - though keep on the main paths as Billy's type lurk in the shadows. And the crown jewels in the Tower. One of the theatres is of course a must! Cat P.S. You best check all the above attractions are open when you come as my knowledge is taken from my last extended stay in London in 1791 - I've been travelling since.

I think he would be very very sad and vice versa. Cat

Cat did you ever tell Syd about little turtle? did he get mad?

Why would he be mad? I think he felt sorry for my lost friend. Cat

for frank and/or charlie: exactly how many times have you had need (or should i say oppurtunity) to execute the captain bennington-smythe manuever? Do you follow the same procedeure each time, or just make it up as you go?

(The duchess is the guest this month)

Anna wrote on 04 March 2010:

I bet Frank wouldn't be pleased if you said he was passable!! We have just been on holiday near Jamaica, unfortunatley, we didn't go to it. Did you know that slavery has ended in Jamaica? Oh, a big well done to you for the library scene, I loved it! By the way, do you think Syd underestimates girls? (Frank would understand - he would find it scary if I languished over him. Not ended yet as far as I know. And yes, often! Cat)

Hi again Cat, I have another question to ask you, if I may. When you dropped Georgie's bracelet to distract Hawkin's men on the pier, did you manage to retrieve it? I looked in Black Heart of Jamaica, but I couldn't find the answer. Thanks again. (In the excitement I have completely forgotten it too - I am afraid it might be lost for ever! Cat)

Hi Cat. I love you and your books. do you love Syd? I want to have him to look out for me. Do you realize you're already in Syd's gang? Is Frank good looking? What about Pedro? i'M YOUR NUMBER ONE FAN! is Tweadle a 'number two' or what. Is it cool to have Syd look out for you. Can you describe what he looks like for me? I want to add him to my imagination!!!!!! Your number one fan, Frankie (Dear Frankie, Syd is a tower of strength and always reliable - one of the few constant things in my life. Frank is passable (!) as is Pedro but you have to use your imagination to fill in the rest. Cat)

Arya wrote on 03 March 2010:

Dear Cat, I recently learned some interesting things about stages and such. Is it true that if you say Macbeth on stage it will haunt the show, and do you believe that? Also, I heard that actors had such good diction during Shakespeare's time that the janitors swept up (pardon me) their spit. Is that true too? One last question. If I want to write to the dear Duchess, do I write it on here and label it as to the Duchess? Thanks! Your faithful reader, Arya. (Dear Arya The correct term for the duchess is 'your grace'. SSh, don't say that name. And I think there were no janitors in Shakespeare's day as it was open air and smelly groundlings right by the stage. Cat)
