What do you think...?

What do you think?

Those of you who have read quite a few of my books will have gathered that I'm very interested in the environment and other issues of our day (eg financial crisis in The Glass Swallow).  I thought I would open a page to hear your views in response to things that I've been impressed by.  If you have a perspective you want to share, let me know here.  I'll kick off with this YouTube poem by Jonathan Reed - keep with it - it becomes very inspiring!

This was very inspiring. So many things are happening in this world today and sometimes we just need to take a moment to sort out our priorities and feelings.

Truly inspiring. This is what some people in the world need to see, so they can think about what they are really doing. Linnea

That was quite inspiring actually :) I'm quite cynical really, and I think my generation (I'm 15) in general are very cynical because we are constantly having negativity thrown at us. My main concern is poverty as I do not feel there is any need for it, and that is what I want to change. I always feel bad because I live in a nice house and have nice things and some of my friends families can't afford a house of their own but their parents don't work any less hard than mine. It seems so unfair to me and that needs to change.

Kate Macfarlane wrote on 02 November 2011:

Can I just say to anyone concerned that they can't do much to change the world "Anything you can do - even if it seems like not very much, is better than doing nothing at all". If you are really interested, get active, see if you can find any local groups online in your area. There are often people who take care of and maintain woods or 'Green spaces' local to you, so find out and ask if you can join in. Recycling rather than throwing stuff out makes a difference, and that's something everyone can do. You are the quiet majority, don't let the loud (but often ignorant) minority shout you down, lead by example, and spread the word through your freinds and family.

Sometimes I feel like Jane in the Companions Quartet novels when she said that she feels like a fraud. I try to be a really eco-friendly person but sometimes you feel like what you're doing ins't helping the world at all. I'm from U.S. Where they have 4-h and I'm doing a presentation on wildlife rehab but I feel so fake standing up there talking about helping those birds when even I am not doing everything I say you can do. I save water that runs off our chicken and doghouse roofs, recycle, use reusable bags, and pick up trash that lands in our yard; I just wish the rest of the world would try to be green. -Elizabeth, United States

I'm very enviromentaly friendly myself. (this includes my family too)I'm a vegetarian,I always look out for palm oil in food cause people only get palm oil by cutting down innocent animals homes and destroying not only their homes but the land and trees and plants and insects ans climate around them.My dad collects rain water for the kettle,we don't use heating at all in summer,we don't have a car and so use public transport only, recycle, use as little electricity as we can and we do everything we can to save our planet. I get RSPCA mags and fund raise and am going to adopt an animal and support it as much as I can. It looks hopeful for the future.Sorchax

Mrs Golding- That was amazing. The scary part is, some of that is so true. Some people believe that horrible side of the message, and some believe the beauty of the truth. It used to be a perfectly balanced scale, but now it tips toward the blackness. One sudden thing will decide what happens, whether we go forth into the future with destruction or with change. What worries me most, though, is how quickly the sudden thing can happen unless people learn. At my school (I live in the United States), we have a forum page where we can talk about school subjects online. There was a discussion about poorness, and how a lack of money can effect our nation. It turned to a discussion as to why some people don't have much, or any, money. The things that were said were horrible. They said things like "poor people want to be poor", "they have a mental condition", "why give them money, they'll just go spend it on another bridge to live under", and "it's pointless to give poor people money. They'll waste it on fancy phones and rich people things." I quote these directly. What is there that can be dome to change this? My friends were here when we saw this, and they care as much as I do. We WANT to educate them, but we don't know what to do. We want to show people that the poor people aren't sick and uncaring. That some spend years working harder than we ever will, or are born into a family that has no money. Are there ways to change these views and help these people? I feel as if so many of us are ignorant to the conditions of our fellow human beings. The poem you have posted is very moving, and I think it truly shows the feelings of many people. Thanks! -Anna K., United States

Hi!!! What gives you your insperation for the Cat Royal series and what goes on in your head whaen you are writing? When I write I often look around the room or outside the window. Another way for me when I get my insperation is by thinking about places I've been and picturing what they look like OR by thinking about your books and others. I have allways wondered how my favorite writers(You're one of them!) get their inspiration and what goe son in their heads when they are writing. Clare

Hi Clare You can see the inspirations under FAQs - but in short, all things are potential stories! Julia

Hi I love your Cat Royal Series. I am 12 years of age and have read them all except "the Middle Passage". I first found out about you and Miss Cat (Catherine) Royal when my dad bought me the 3rd book in series for my 11th birthday. I love the original way of writing the book like a diary but in the way of a play script (I have been on a script writing course led by Colin MacFarlane). My favourite character is the feisty Cat Royal herself! When my dad and me went to London to see the "Lion King" we walked around theatre land looking for the theatre Royal in your books. We found it! It's really impressive! We found loads of others as well!I really enjoy writing stories as well and have considered becoming an author myself when I am older. Thank you for writing the series! Clare

Just a thought...Have you read "Lost," "Sent" or "Sabotaged" by Mageret Peterson Haddix, I think you might like them as they have a similar concept as this poem (the lost generation). Although the books are in the teens catergory!. P.S. What a moving poem!

I haven't. I'll look out for them.
